Our History

At Mevalco, we don’t just import Spanish ingredients—we curate the finest flavors of Spain for chefs across the UK. With over 750 carefully selected ingredients from 120 trusted suppliers, we believe every dish can tell a story, whether it’s served in a bistro or a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Our journey began 20 years ago in the mountains of Asturias, Northern Spain, with our founder, David Menendez. As a vet, David’s respect for animals led to a deep appreciation for artisanal producers who cherish tradition. When he moved to the UK, he wanted to share these incredible products with British chefs, and Mevalco was born.

Sourcing is at the core of what we do. Our team in Madrid constantly seeks out the best producers across Spain, building relationships with small-scale farmers, fishermen, and artisans. We take pride in our rigorous selection process, choosing ingredients that meet the highest standards and tell the story of their origin, from Andalusian olives to Iberico pork from Extremadura.

Our commitment extends beyond quality to sustainability. We’ve shown that Spanish olive oils, for instance, can have a lower carbon footprint than some local alternatives. By supporting small producers who practice sustainable methods, we’re ensuring these culinary treasures can be enjoyed for generations.

Over the last 20 years, we’ve become a key part of British cuisine, inspiring chefs and raising standards. From our base in Bristol, our passionate team delivers the essence of Spain to top UK restaurants, across a range of cuisines. At Mevalco, we’re on a mission to provide the finest establishments with ingredients that elevate every dish, celebrating the artisans who create them and the chefs who bring them to life.

Our Vans

The iconic Mevalco blue vans are a familiar sight on the streets of Bristol and beyond. These vibrant vehicles symbolise Mevalco’s commitment to delivering the finest Spanish ingredients to top UK restaurants. Equipped to ensure the utmost freshness and quality, the teal vans are integral to Mevalco’s efficient and reliable service, bringing artisanal products to chefs across the country.

The people behind mevalco

Meet the team

From humble beginnings, we are now a proud team of nearly 40 people. From our buying and international logistics team to our committed drivers, from our sales team to our warehouse teams, from our quality department to our accounts colleagues, we all feel utterly proud of show casing the best of Spanish gastronomy to you. Many of us have been in Mevalco for many years, and we truly hope this shows in how we deal with you and your team daily.

Purchasing and Quality

Roberto, Cristina, Jose, Joanna and Fede are our purchasing and quality control team members. With over 40 years experience in international logistics, food hygiene and stock control, they are the backbone of Mevalco. Based in Spain the team is in constant touch with our supply partners, ensuring we can offer you products always at their peak.

Sales Team

Ricardo, Edgar and Pablo from the office, Sam, Luke, Cesar and Tom in the field, are keen foodies, and know our range inside out to help you decide what works best for your menu or shop. Sam, Cesar and Tom are experienced and talented chefs, always on hand to deliver fresh inspiration or help develop and finesse your menus to ensure you have unique points of interest. Luke has over 35 years expertise on food, he is an international cheese judge and is our specialist in retail and cheeses.

Warehouse

Tony leads the warehousing team which prepares your orders and runs a spot-on operation from our warehouse in Bristol. Maria, Dani, Adrian, Connor, Yosney, Mariola, Victor and Ricardo have been with us for a long time and take pride in ensuring you receive the right products at the right time.

Drivers

Our busy fleet of 10 drivers are the face our business, they are who you see week in, week out. We are proud of working with them for such a long time, and our clients report happy faces and beyond duty service. Thanks guys!

Accounts & Admin

Lina leads our team, and together with Dan, Deimante and Michael they run an efficient and very approachable team, which links nicely with all our clients.

Directors

David is a veterinary surgeon, with experience in rural development and food hygiene. His passion for good food, and to add value to farming and fishing communities sits at the heart of Mevalco’s culture and ethos. Justin successfully co-founded and ran The Cheese Cellar Co, and since he joined Mevalco, his mind for efficiency and finances have helped the company grow to new heights. Among many other interests he is an International cheese judge.

SUSTAINABILITY

Showing you amazing products that will withstand the passing of time, and that will be available for generations to come is our main motivation.

Our suppliers/partners are chosen carefully and these are our criteria for working with them:

  • Environmental sustainable. Sourcing/growing/rearing their ingredients in areas particularly acclimated for the products. The production reflects the terroir and that area’s climate. Extensive farming is promoted.
  • Social sustainable. Our producers should be key to keeping rural communities alive. No large corporations were selected, but small/medium-sized companies where the workforce is looked after.
  • Forward-thinking. Even though they are rooted in tradition, they use technology to reduce their carbon footprint and use of water.
